think about it, if we all like our work then why we linger around those how to enjoy your job books while we are in the bookstore.
if we really "looking forward to the new project" then we won't have the Monday blue in Sunday evening.
if we don't need a title to prove what we are, what are we going to introduce ourselves.
sadly, most of the time, we need it.
as usual, i walk around in the bookstore hoping that i will find some books that can help me to remember who i am and what i want to be. then the big word "work" catch my eyes. it's definitely becuz of the books title. it seems to be...poetic "the pleasures and sorrows of work".
this is not my favorite book but i like some of Alain de Botton's observation and interpretation.
the marketer who is on the edge of breakdown due to the new marketing campaign about having one's own moment in the stressful life, work in particular. if she or he doesn't have to do this, there's no such a stressful hour.
we don't go to work becuz we like it nor we enjoy pursuing the sense of achievement. we are actually motivated by fear. the fear to answer THE QUESTION "what's the meaning of my life?" hence work is just a means of killing time. it's not the best solution but it's the best we have so far.
so oh yes work drives us crazy, especially those decent and respectful job. without caffeine and alcohol, there's no way people can function well, considering the "pressure" they take. the people who own fabulous jobs in fact become an object in this work- life relation.
and it's very often we ask ourselves this question when we tune off the computer, pack our bag leaving the office or standing still in the bus "what have i done today?" becuz we are just part of the collaborative plan, no individual exists in this mechanism, compares to the carpenter non of us can say "I made it!". No one.
however, i don't agree with the author fully. i don't think i want to work. i need to work, yes for sure.
i trade my freedom for money so that i can live the life i want. if one day i can have my ideal life, i will give up my work.
there is always someone else who is better than i am for this job and someone who needs this job more than i do.
yet until that day, i am just going to keep digging on...... work with you.
